Put simply, the foundations beneath a house or building must ensure the effective, balanced transfer of the structural loadings acting upon the ground supporting it – but all while preventing any overstressing of that ground.
Below, we have briefly introduced the types of foundations we install.
Pile Foundations
A type of deep foundation, pile foundations consist of long columns – usually steel or reinforced concrete – placed vertically into the ground. This solution transfers the load of the superstructure through weak, compressible soil (or even water) to more compact, stronger ground at a greater depth.
SLK Construction typically uses pile foundations for larger structures, or in situations where the soil upon which you want to build isn’t suitable for the prevention of excessive settlement.
Raft Foundations
These foundations consist of reinforced concrete slabs with a uniform thickness, usually between 150mm and 300mm. Our groundworks team installs them over a wide area, often covering the entire footprint of the house or building to come.
Raft foundations spread the load imposed upon them across their entire area. Due to its size and construction, raft foundations are best conceptualised as ‘floating’ on weak or expansive soils.
Trench-Fill (Strip) Foundations
A type of shallow foundation, this solution is self-explanatory: we pour concrete into a meticulously calculated trench. However, we don’t pour to the top. Rather, we stop around 150mm below ground level. The resulting foundation creates a continuous concrete strip beneath load-bearing walls. This feature has the necessary width to spread its load evenly without disturbing the soil.
This approach avoids the need for below-ground bricklaying. As a result, it also minimises the amount of excavation required at your Basingstoke, Farnham, Guilford or local-area site, making your project more time-efficient and cost-effective.
We typically use these foundations in subsoils with good load-bearing capacity. What’s more, these installations usually support structures with a relatively modest load, such as low-to-medium rise dwellings.
